AMERICAN ROAD
FEATURES MANCHESTER!
The Spring
2010 edition of national travel magazine American
Road features a cover photo by
Karl Racenis of David
Armstrong's customized 1950's Chevrolet Pickup in downtown Manchester.
"Seeking Lost Silence" is an
article about the 1917 Tecumseh Trail from Toledo to Jackson.
"Manchester
is the Tecumseh Trail's picture-perfect town. Lacking a
large artery to drag clutter to its edges, its storefronts belong in
the background of a Norman Rockwell painting. That's presumably what
artist Mary Tiefels thought in 2007 when she crafted Manchester's
mural. The large-scale montage, pinched between buildings on the south
side of Main Street, portrays the town's most notable structures,
including the John F. Schneider Blacksmith Shop and the Manchester Mill.
The mill
itself coaxes tourists with pocket cameras to the very edge of the
Raisin River. After milling operations ceased in the 1980's, citizens
reshaped the cherry-red landmark into a community center to grind out
grist of a friendly civic sort."
If the Mill
marks Manchester's scarlet heart, its stomach belongs to the Manchester
Chicken Broil..."
